The USDA Foreign Agricultural Service (FAS) recently published data for U.S. lamb, sheep and goat meat trade. The numbers include fresh, chilled and frozen product, as well as carcasses, cuts and bone-in and boneless product. According to the data, during the first quarter of 2013, the U.S. exported 974 MT of lamb and sheep meat. This was 22.4 percent less than the previous quarter and was 34.3 percent less than a year ago. Lamb and sheep meat exports to Mexico during the first quarter were 31.5 percent lower than the previous quarter but were 12.4 percent higher than a year ago, totaling 722 MT. Mexico was the main destination for U.S. lamb and sheep meat with 74.1 percent of the total exports. During the first quarter, the U.S. exported 80 MT of lamb and sheep meat to Canada, which was 90.1 percent higher than the previous quarter but was 53.3 percent lower than a year ago. Canada accounted for 8.3 percent of the total U.S. lamb and sheep meat export market. Meanwhile, during the first quarter of 2013, the U.S. imported 19,704 MT of lamb and sheep meat. This was up 18.7 percent over the previous quarter and was up 30.0 percent over a year ago. Lamb and sheep meat imports from Australia during the first quarter totaled 13,191 MT, which was 10.0 percent more than the previous quarter and was 31.8 percent more than a year ago. Australia was the main supplier of lamb and sheep meat to the U.S. with 66.9 percent of the total imports. During the first quarter, lamb and sheep meat imports from New Zealand rose 43.7 percent over the previous quarter to 6,494 MT. Also, this was 27.8 percent higher than a year ago. Imports from New Zealand comprised 33.0 percent of the total. Meanwhile, during the first quarter of 2013, U.S. goat meat imports fell 24.0 percent from the previous quarter to 4,300 MT. However, this was 63.4 percent more than a year ago. U.S. first quarter goat meat imports from Australia equaled 4,261 MT. This was 23.9 percent lower than the previous quarter but was 62.4 percent higher than a year ago. Australia was the largest market for U.S. goat meat imports with 99.1 percent of the total. Recently, CanFax released Canada’s current cattle on feed numbers for terminal feedlots with 1,000 or more head in the provinces of Alberta and Saskatchewan. According to the data, on May 1, 2013, Canada’s total cattle on feed equaled 885,294 head. This was 4.6 percent lower than one year ago and was 8.0 percent lower than the five year average. During April, 134,769 head of cattle were placed on feed, which was 24.4 percent more than one year ago. However, this was 4.6 percent less than the five year average. Steers placed on feed totaled 86,568 head, which accounted for 64.2 percent of the total. Heifers placed on feed totaled 48,201 head. More specifically, placements of feeder cattle in each weight category increased over a year ago. Placements weighing less than 600 pounds were 156.7 percent greater than last year, totaling 9,149 head. Placements weighing 600 to 699 pounds equaled 10,600 head, 53.1 percent more than a year ago. Feeder cattle placements weighing 700 to 799 pounds were 14.0 percent higher than a year ago, amounting to 26,120 head. Finally, placements of feeder cattle weighing more than 800 pounds equaled 88,900 head, which was 18.6 percent more than last year. In the meantime, Canada’s fed cattle marketings equaled 129,808 head, which was 2.5 percent more than one year ago but was 3.7 percent less than the five year average. Canadian Cattle On Feed in Alberta & Saskatchewan Feedlots

On May 17, the USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS) released its monthly Cattle on Feed report. According to the data, on May 1, 2013, cattle and calves on feed for the U.S. slaughter market for feedlots with a capacity of 1,000 or more head totaled 10.74 million head. This was down 3.4 percent from one year ago and was down 3.9 percent from two years ago. During April, 1.75 million head of cattle were placed on feed, which was 15.1 percent higher than one year ago but was 2.0 percent lower than two years ago. More specifically, placements of feeder cattle increased in each weight category over a year ago. Placements of feeder cattle weighing less than 600 pounds equaled 375,000 head, 5.6 percent more than last year. Placements weighing 600 to 699 pounds were up 8.0 percent over a year ago, amounting to 270,000 head. Placements weighing 700 to 799 pounds totaled 455,000 head, which was 19.7 percent higher than last year. Finally, placements of feeder cattle weighing more than 800 pounds were 21.3 percent greater than a year ago, totaling 650,000 head. In the meantime, during April, U.S. fed cattle marketings totaled 1.86 million head. This was 2.2 percent more than one year ago and was 2.7 percent more than two years ago. On May 22, USDA NASS released its monthly Cold Storage report. According to the report, as of April 30, 2013 beef in U.S. cold storage facilities totaled 510.0 million pounds, which was 1.5 percent less than last year. However, this was 15.7 percent greater than the five year average. Specifically, boneless beef in cold storage was up 3.2 percent over a year ago, amounting to 459.8 million pounds. The volume of beef cuts in cold storage was 30.5 percent lower than a year ago, totaling 50.2 million pounds. Meanwhile, pork in cold storage at the end of April equaled 698.8 million pounds, setting a new record high. This was up 5.9 percent over a year ago and was up 16.6 percent over the five year average. The volume of hams in storage equaled 125.5 million pounds. This was 12.5 percent greater than a year ago. Pork bellies in cold storage totaled 56.4 million pounds, which was 24.8 percent lower than last year. The volume of loins in storage was 3.5 percent more than last year, amounting to 46.2 million pounds. Pork ribs in cold storage totaled 120.5 million pounds, 11.7 percent higher than a year ago. Pork butts in cold storage equaled 23.9 million pounds, which was 25.4 percent less than last year. The volume of trimmings in cold storage increased 6.0 percent over last year to 66.3 million pounds. Veal in U.S. cold storage facilities totaled 5.4 million pounds, 43.8 percent more than a year ago. Lamb and mutton in storage totaled 21.8 million pounds, which was up 10.4 percent over last year. The Australian Lot Feeders’ Association (ALFA) and Meat & Livestock Australia (MLA) recently issued the results of Australia’s first quarter cattle on feed survey. According to the numbers, Australia’s cattle on feed on March 31, 2013 totaled 799,034 head. This was nearly 1.0 percent more than the previous quarter and was 6.2 percent more than a year ago. The majority of Australia’s cattle on feed were in the state of Queensland with 470,212 head, which comprised 58.8 percent of the total. This was down 3.8 percent from the previous quarter. Combined, Queensland and New South Wales had 88.9 percent of the total cattle on feed in Australia, or 710,058 head. During the first quarter of 2013, Australia’s feedlot capacity totaled 1,188,815 head. This was 6.8 percent less than the previous quarter and was 5.5 percent less than a year ago. Queensland had the largest feedlot capacity with 662,856 head, which accounted for 55.8 percent of the total. Capacity utilization was at 67 percent, compared to 62 percent the previous quarter and 60 percent a year ago. During the first quarter, Australia’s cattle marketings equaled 615,362 head. This was 10.1 percent lower than the previous quarter but was 3.9 percent higher than a year ago. During the first quarter of 2013, Australia’s cattle slaughter totaled 1,586,000 head. Japan’s Agriculture and Livestock Industries Corporation (ALIC) recently released Japan’s red meat import data for March 2013. According to the numbers, during March, Japan imported 40,443 MT of beef. This was 31.5 percent more than the previous month and was 8.1 percent more than March 2012. More specifically, frozen beef imports totaled 22,896 MT, which was up 37.6 percent over the previous month and was up 15.9 percent over March 2012. Fresh, chilled beef imports totaled 17,495 MT, which was up 24.3 percent over the previous month but was down slightly from March 2012. During March, Japan’s beef imports from Australia rose 42.2 percent over the previous month to 25,785 MT. Also, this was 8.7 percent higher than March 2012. Year-to-date beef imports from Australia were down 13.1 percent from last year, totaling 65,409 MT. Australia was the main beef import market for Japan with 61.9 percent of the total. Japan’s beef imports from the U.S. during March equaled 9,239 MT. Although this was 16.6 percent more than February, it was slightly less than March 2012. Total year-to-date beef imports from the U.S. were down 1.2 percent from a year ago, amounting to 25,008 MT. Beef imports from New Zealand during March rose 8.7 percent over the previous month to 2,729 MT. This was down 2.4 percent from March 2012. Year-to-date beef imports from New Zealand totaled 7,592 MT, which was 3.0 percent less than a year ago. Overall, Japan’s total year-to-date beef imports equaled 105,645 MT, 7.8 percent below the same period a year ago. Japan’s beef marketings during February totaled 63,080 MT, 4.3 percent lower than the previous month and 14.3 percent lower than last year. Imported beef marketings were down 17.8 percent from a year ago, totaling 36,748 MT. Domestic beef marketings equaled 26,332 MT, which was 8.8 percent less than a year ago. At the end of February, Japan’s beef stocks totaled 85,960 MT, which was down 6.6 percent from the previous month and was down 1.3 percent from a year ago. Stocks of imported beef equaled 73,183 MT, 3.1 percent less than last year. Stocks of domestic beef totaled 12,777 MT, 10.5 percent higher than a year ago.

During March, Japan imported 59,538 MT of pork. Although this was up 2.7 percent over February, it was down 9.6 percent from March 2012. Specifically, imports of frozen pork totaled 37,461 MT, which was a little higher than the previous month but was 13.9 percent lower than March 2012. Imports of fresh, chilled pork totaled 22,074 MT, which was 6.8 percent higher than the previous month but was 1.4 percent lower than March 2012. During March, Japan imported 23,168 MT of pork from the U.S. This was up 3.9 percent over February but was down 21.7 percent from March 2012. Total year-to-date pork imports from the U.S. were 16.4 percent less than last year, amounting to 70,194 MT. The U.S. was the largest supplier of pork to Japan with 39.1 percent of the total imports. Pork imports from Canada during March rose 1.3 percent over the previous month to 12,206 MT. However, this was down 16.8 percent from March 2012. Year-to-date pork imports from Canada totaled 35,607 MT, which was 16.5 percent less than a year ago. Japan’s pork imports from Denmark during March totaled 8,480 MT, which was down 3.5 percent from the previous month and was down 7.8 percent from March 2012. Year-to-date pork imports from Denmark were 5.7 percent lower than last year, amounting to 27,889 MT. Overall, Japan’s total year-to-date pork imports equaled 179,487 MT, 9.3 percent below the corresponding period a year ago. Japan’s pork marketings during February fell 1.1 percent from the previous month and 2.9 percent from a year ago to 129,491 MT. Imported pork marketings totaled 59,111 MT, which was 6.4 percent less than last year. Marketings of domestic pork imports were down 9.6 percent from a year ago, equaling 70,380 MT. At the end of February, Japan’s pork stocks totaled 176,780 MT, which was up slightly over the previous month but was down 3.7 percent from a year ago. Stocks of imported pork totaled 153,297 MT, 5.7 percent less than a year ago. Stocks of domestic pork equaled 23,483 MT, 12.1 percent higher than last year. The Korea International Trade Association (KITA) recently issued April 2013 beef and pork import data for South Korea. According to the data, during April, South Korea imported 20,513 MT of beef. Although this was up 7.6 percent over the previous month, it was down 7.7 percent from April 2012. More specifically, frozen beef imports totaled 17,316 MT, which comprised 84.4 percent of the total. Fresh, chilled beef imports totaled 3,198 MT. During April, South Korea imported 11,927 MT of beef from Australia, which was 14.1 percent more than March and was 11.5 percent more than April 2012. Total year-to-date beef imports from Australia were 10.7 percent greater than last year, amounting to 46,522 MT. Australia was the main beef import market for South Korea with 52.5 percent of the total. South Korea’s beef imports from the U.S. during April equaled 5,964 MT. This was little changed from the previous month but was down 29.4 percent from April 2012. Year-to-date beef imports from the U.S. were 7.8 percent less than a year ago, totaling 31,145 MT. During April, South Korea’s beef imports from New Zealand fell 2.2 percent from the previous month and fell 7.7 percent from April 2012 to 2,428 MT. Year-to-date beef imports from New Zealand totaled 10,004 MT, 7.9 percent higher than last year. Overall, South Korea’s total year-to-date beef imports equaled 88,646 MT, which was 2.4 percent above the same period a year ago. Meanwhile, South Korea’s pork imports during April rose 6.7 percent over March to 26,661 MT. However, this was down 27.0 percent from April 2012. Pork imports from the U.S. during April equaled 8,836 MT, which was 17.7 percent lower than the previous month and was 30.2 percent lower than April 2012. Total year to-date pork imports from the U.S. were 12.3 percent below last year, amounting to 43,921 MT. The U.S. was the main supplier of pork to South Korea with 39.8 percent of the total imports. During April, South Korea imported 3,903 MT of pork from Canada. Although this was up 17.7 percent over the previous month, it was down 10.3 percent from April 2012. Year-to-date pork imports from Canada totaled 14,656 MT, which was 34.9 percent less than a year ago. South Korea’s pork imports from Chile during April rose 74.3 percent over the previous month to 3,553 MT. Also, this was up 6.2 percent over April 2012. Year-to-date pork imports from Chile totaled 11,969 MT, which was down 5.5 percent from last year. Overall, South Korea’s total year-to-date pork imports equaled 110,478 MT, 29.4 percent below the corresponding period a year ago.
