European Commission Calls for Fair Play along Food Chain

The European Commission is to introduce measures that will help to protect small producer, processors and retailers in the food chain.

Concern is rising that some members of the food supply chain are being disadvantaged by pressure being imposed by the larger producers, processors and retailers.

Now new measures from the Commission will help to ease the pressure.

The Commission is backing a voluntary supply chain initiative that will include voluntary codes of conduct and better communication along the food cahin.

It will also assist in establishing EU-wide standards of principles for good practice and it will promote better enforcement at a national level.

It is ironic that on the day the European Commission announced this new initiative the German anti-trust office Bundeskartellamt has fined 21 sausage manufacturers and 33 individuals for illegal price-fixing.

The companies were fined a total of €338 million.

The anti-trust authority said that over several decades well-known sausage manufacturers had regularly met within the so-called "Atlantic Group", named after their first meeting place, the Hotel Atlantic in Hamburg, to discuss market developments and prices.

There had been agreements between several sausage manufacturers, in particular since 2003, to jointly implement price increases for the sale of sausage products to the retail trade.

In the UK this week, the National Farmers Union has also launched a fierce attack on the supermarket chain Tesco for promoting New Zealand lamb at the height of the British lamb season.
