Editorial: Call to Finalise Free Trade Agreements

Meat industry and agriculture organisations in the US are pressing the government to finalise a series free trade agreements that they believe will boost trade and jobs.

The organisations are pressing for the South Korea - Us agreement to be signed.

They say that the risks for agriculture are extreme is an agreement is not reached because other trading nations have already reached deals with South Korea and the US exporters will be placed at a disadvantage.

In Sweden, researchers claim that a climate tax corresponding to €60/ton CO2eq on meat and milk could reduce greenhouse gas emissions from European agriculture by around seven per cent. If the land made available is used for bioenergy production, the decrease in emissions can be six times greater.

This week the International Poultry Exposition is taking place in Atlanta, Georgia, and a number of conferences are being held in conjunction with the Expo including one on the eve of the show - the Animal Agriculture Sustainability Summit.

The Canadian government is using the Slaughter Improvement Program to invest in the industry to help create jobs.

The government is to invest up to C$1 million in Les Viandes Laroche Inc to enable the company to strengthen its operations and help bring farmers’ products to market.
