Belgian Meat Groups Merge

BELGIUM -Two Belgian meat groups Westvlees and Covalis are to merge their pork operations.

Westvlees NV is a family business that has bee running for 50 years from Westrozebeke and also has plants in Aubel (Love Fosse), Moorslede (d Hulster) and Staden (Lava Meat) and slaughters and processes 2 million pigs per year.

Westvlees is a leader on the Belgian market and also sees 45 per cent of its production exported.

Covalis NV runs the Comeco and Covameat, Wijtschate slaughterhouses s well as the activities of Covalis itself. The Covalis Group slaughter and processes 2.2 million pigs a year.

The operation is part of the Covavee cooperative, providing 85% of the supply of pigs to Covalis.

The company supplies the supermarket trade in Belgium as well as exporting 60 per cent of its production.
