Chicken Gains in Popularity in Lithuania

24 November 2014

LITHUANIA - Average chicken consumption has risen to around 25kg per person and year from just 12kg in 2003.

A Lithuanian resident currently consumes around 25 kilograms of poultry in a year, while the rate a decade ago stood at 12 kilograms in 2003, according to Baltic Course, citing the new agency, LETA/ELTA.

Data of Lithuania Statistics and the Lithuanian Institute of Agrarian Economics shows that in 2013 Lithuanian residents were supplied with a total of 251,000 tonnes of various kinds of meat, of which poultry accounted for 96,300 tonnes.

During the Lithuanian Aviculture Conference held last week in the Kaisiadoriai town, Vytautas Tevelis, the president of the poultry association said the meat and poultry sector currently produces a total of 270 eggs and 30kg of poultry for every resident of the country.

Poultry production worldwide grows by two to three per cent every year, the report adds.
