AUSTRALIA - Australian September beef and veal offal exports, primarily heading to Japan, Korea, Hong Kong and Indonesia, reached 14,255 tonnes, a 20 per cent increase year-on-year, taking the year-to-September total to a record 118,709 tonnes, up 14 per cent on the same period last year.

Meat and Livestock Australia said that this record volume of offal exports is obviously closely linked to the very high cattle slaughter all through 2014.

Accounting for 24 per cent of beef and veal offal exports, September tripe shipments were 3,448 tonnes.

From MLA’s monthly co-products survey, tripe pieces averaged A$2.99/kg in September, steady year-on-year, while honeycomb tripe and omasum continued their upward movements, averaging A$6.76/kg and A$6.75/kg, respectively.

Non-halal liver prices averaged A$1.05/kg, down 3¢/kg year-on-year, however halal liver prices showed improvement, averaging 5¢/kg dearer on A$1.28/kg.

September sheep, lamb and goat offal exports came to 3,071 tonnes, up 21 per cent year-on-year, taking the year-to-September total to 25,470 tonnes, an 11 per cent increase on the same period last year.

Hong Kong and Saudi Arabia remained the largest export markets, taking 29 per cent and 28 per cent of September shipments, respectively.

Sheep tripe averaged A$4.00/kg, down 10¢/kg year-on-year, and sheep liver prices were 15¢/kg cheaper, averaging A$1.40/kg.

MBM 50 prices averaged $620/tonne ex-works, down A$36/tonne year-on-year, with reports of new season soybeans being offered at a significant discount.

Beef tallow (1 per cent FFA) also continued move downward, averaging A$631.20/tonne ex-works for the month and A$270/tonne below year ago levels – when renewable fuel subsidies drove prices to record highs.

The Queensland (TFA) green hide price (280-350 kg HCW) averaged A$56.83/hide ex-works, up A$1.83/hide on August, while prices in New South Wales and Victoria averaged A$66.88/hide and A$68.00/hide, respectively, up A$1.98/hide and A$0.33/hide.
