Court Fines Cargill for Tampered Wastewater Samples

22 August 2014

CANADA - An Alberta Provincial Court judge has fined Cargill Limited C$80,000 for failing to immediately report intentionally-diluted wastewater samples.

The offences occurred in the company’s High River beef plant between February and March 2012.

An agreed statement of facts indicates that a former employee admitted to tampering with three composite treatment wastewater samples containing phosphorus before they were sent to an external lab for analysis.

In April 2012, Cargill notified Alberta Environment and Sustainable Resource Development of potential errors with its March 2012 wastewater report.

There is no evidence that any environmental harm occurred as a result of wastewater that contained levels of phosphorus above the approved level.
