SPAIN – Spanish farmers play a significant role in meat production on a European level, poultry and beef producers have been told.
Poultry production totalled 1,369,628 tons of meat in 2013, as beef yielded over 580,000 tons from 2.219 million animals, according to official Ministry of Agriculture statistics.
This cemented Spain as the European Union’s third chicken producer and fifth for beef.
The data showed that Spanish poultry production accounts for 11.6 per cent of the EU total and 11.1 per cent of chicken production.
Chicken accounted for 82 per cent of poultry meat produced.
The report confirmed 2013 as a better year for beef, as higher prices and lower feed costs improved profitability.
The report added that, when coupled with lamb and goat meat, beef forms part of a five per cent of total livestock production in Spain.
