Seafood Industry Focuses on Consumer Labelling and Traceability Regulations

UK - Seafood processing businesses are being invited to attend a seminar on consumer labelling and traceability regulations to help the sector get smarter about recent changes to the EU's food information legislation.

Seafish, the authority on seafood, is hosting the event at the Humber Seafood Institute in Grimsby on Thursday 10 April from 10am-12.30pm which is free to fish and shellfish processors.

The seminar will cover the EU's new Food Information to Consumers regulation, which comes in to effect from 14 December 2014, and how this is to be interpreted for the seafood industry.

Additionally, new fisheries control legislation taking effect at the same time will mean seafood labels will need to include more information such as origin of product and catching method.

DEFRA and the Marine Management Organisation (MMO), who are responsible for implementing these changes, will be at the seminar to get feedback from the processors on how the legislation will impact the industry. This feedback will be used to help the Government shape its interpretation and advice of the EU regulation for the UK.

Additional traceability requirements due to the Common Organisation of Markets (CMO) will also be covered on the day.

This seminar not only gives them the opportunity to feedback on the challenges and opportunities of the new labelling laws but it's also a good way to network and find out how other businesses are approaching the situation."
