CHILE – Chilean poultry production rocketed through January and February despite major product losses being incurred at a processing plant fire.
Poultry sector output lifted 20 per cent while profits contracted four per cent for January, according to the Ministry of Agriculture’s March Outlook.
This took poultry meat production to a new monthly high of 58,955 in January.
Bigger birds pushed average weights up 0.4 kilos from 2.2 kg to 2.6kg.
Pork production slumped 16 per cent leading to a rise in February’s wholesale price – up 8.7 per cent.
Overall however, pork prices are running 6 per cent lower for 2014.
Pork export fell 25 per cent, almost matched by imports – up 25.4 per cent.
The Ministry calculated a 5,300 tonne export drop as 1,200 more tonnes more than normal was imported.
