Australian Pork Producers Oppose Raw Pork Imports28 February 2014
AUSTRALIA - New Zealand has started importing raw pork into to its domestic market, but Australian producers remain implacably opposed.
ABC reports that Australia currently prohibits fresh pork imports to limit the spread of disease.
However, New Zealand's gates opened in December when the Court of Appeal found the New Zealand Ministry for Primary Industries followed the correct decision-making process before allowing imports of raw pork from countries where the disease Porcine Reproductive and Respiratory Syndrome (PRRS) is present.
The Australian pig industry maintains changes to New Zealand's import health standards for pig meat and pig products should not open the raw pork import door.
Australia currently permits processed pork products like bacon, salami and prosciutto, but raw pork primals are not allowed in.
Australian Pork Limited research and innovation manager Darryl D'Souza says New Zealand can import pork from countries including the United States and Denmark.
"We certainly don't believe that fresh imported pork will enter into Australia for a whole range of reasons.
"One being, our risks as far as imported pork are quite different from New Zealand.
"We have issues around swill feeding.
"We've got large populations of feral pigs that migrate quite extensively and they're not only a risk to us, the pork industry, but potentially other livestock industries."
Future funding of quarantine in Tasmania is being debated in the lead up to the Tasmanian election, with a $700,000 federal funding agreement with the state about to expire mid-year.
