Maltese Meat Production Down25 February 2014
MALTA - In the fourth quarter of 2013, meat production in Malta and the producer value of meat fell by two and 1.5 per cent respectively, when compared to the corresponding period in 2012, according to the National Statistics Office (NSO) of Malta.
During the fourth quarter of last year, meat production declined by 2.0 per cent to 3,032 tonnes, mainly on account of an 11.6 and 5.8 per cent drop in the production of beef and broiler meat respectively. However, this was partially mitigated by an increase of 2.7 per cent in the production of pig meat.
The decrease in beef and broiler meat production resulted from a 12.2 and 8.0 per cent drop in the number of slaughtered cattle and broilers respectively. In contrast, pig meat production rose mainly due to a 1.0 per cent increase in the number of pigs slaughtered.
The producer value of animals slaughtered at licensed slaughterhouses in the period under review amounted to €6.8 million, or 1.5 per cent less when compared to the fourth quarter of 2012. While the producer value of beef and broiler meat fell by 16.9 and 7.1 per cent respectively on fewer slaughters and lower prices fetched, the increase in the producer value of pig meat mainly went up due to an increase in the production of pig meat and a price rise of 3.2 per cent.
