Protected Status for Yorkshire Cheese

EU – Three new products from the UK, Greece and Turkey, including a traditional cow’s milk cheese, have each been granted protected status by the European Commission.

Yorkshire Wensleydale, a creamy pressed cheese, has been granted protected geographical status (PGI).

The Cheese is primarily produced in Hawes, North Yorkshire, in the valley of Wensleydale and has history dating back to the Cistercian monks in the 11th and 12th centuries.

It can be produced with raw or pasteurised milk.

The other additions are Tamotaki Santorinis, a small Greek tomato grown exclusively on volcanic soils in the microclimate of the Cyclades in the South Aegean region and a Turkish pastry.

The Turkish addition, a sweet pastry filled with semolina cream and Antep pistachio, is the country’s first EU registered product.

The products will join a list of over 1,200 foodstuffs already protected.
