US - Smithfield Foods is to pay out $2 million to settle a dispute with employees over payment for time spent ‘donning and doffing’ protective gear and walking to their work stations.
Three workers at Smithfield Packing’s bacon processing plants brought class actions against the company which were certified by a North Carolina federal judge in 2011, according to a report on Law360.
Under the settlement, the three cases will receive separate payouts of $800,000, $200,000 and $1 million, and the company also will pay up to $800,000 in lawyers’ fees.
Smithfield also will pay up to $5,000 to each of the five named plaintiffs to settle their claims.
