First Fish Stocks for Graaff-Reinet Aquaculture Project

SOUTH AFRICA - Stocks of fish have been delivered to the first commercial scale production unit of the Graaff-Reinet Camdeboo Satellite Aquaculture Project in Eastern Cape.

GRaaff Reinet Aquaculture ProjectThe project is part of the Blue Karoo Trust which is aiming to supply farmed freshwater fish to the Eastern Cape.

The CSAP aims to establish aquaculture clusters and a network of 50 satellite farming systems.

Each aquaculture cluster is expected to eventually produce 1,144 tonnes of fish a month and provide 500 direct jobs and 1,700 indirect jobs as well as more than 1,000 other employment opportunities.

Most of the directly created jobs will be women from the rural community.

The project aims to be a source of sustainable produced cost effective protein.

The pilot projects have been running for about seven years, rearing and processing catfish for the local market.

The project also has a structure training programme.

The commercial scale farm has 13 aquaculture production systems, a hatchery and a processing plant with one line operating at full capacity.
