Competition Highlights Appetite for Quality Assured Beef

UK - A competition backed by EBLEX to find the nation’s best steak pie highlighted the appetite for quality assured beef, attracting a record number of entries.

Entries for this year’s biennial England’s Best Steak Pie Competition were up 57 per cent, with 52 companies from the retail and foodservice sectors submitting 107 pies

The competition forms part of EBLEX’s trade marketing campaign to support sales of quality assured beef and lamb, and 23 products from 18 companies achieved a gold award and qualified for the final stage of the competition.

Turner’s Pies, an independent pie shop from Bognor Regis, was declared winner of the Retail category, while Dunkleys, a manufacturer from Wellingborough in Northamptonshire, won the Foodservice category with its ‘Ashdale Blade of Beef and Malbec Pie.’ As the highest scoring pie overall, Turner’s ‘Steak & Stilton’ was awarded the title of ‘England’s Best Steak Pie.’

Hugh Judd, EBLEX foodservice project manager, said: “The competition is designed to recognise and reward excellence in beef and lamb products and we were delighted with both the number and the high standard of entries received this year. The competition really is a great advocate for pies made from quality assured beef and lamb.”
