Minister Calls for Improvements in Food Inspection04 September 2013
GERMANY - German consumer protection minister Dr Gerd Müller has called for a uniform food inspection system across all countries.
Speaking at the opening of the ninth International Meeting of the Federation of Food Inspectors (BVLK), Dr Müller said there was a stronger need for a federal role in coordinating food inspection.
“Consumer protection in Germany must not stop at the borders of individual states, especially at a time of an increasingly globalised food trade,” he said.
He called for all states to agree a uniform examination system and for food inspectors to be provided with the latest technology as well as an increase in the numbers of food inspectors.
“We need to improve the quality of surveillance and the technical requirements, in particular, are often in need of improvement,” Dr Müller said.
