French Meat Processing Leader Calls for Action on Prices26 July 2013
FRANCE - The president of the French meat industry body SNIV-SNCP, Jean-Paul Biggard, met the agriculture minister Stéphan Le Foll and the food minister Guillaume Garrot this week over the crisis in the French meat sector.
Mr Biggard said the industry was in a state of stagnation.
He warned the agriculture ministers that there was a conflict between the increase in producer prices and the prices that could be obtained by the slaughterers and processors.
He said there was a difficulty in passing the price increases on downstream.
Mr Biggard also pointed out the problems in the market of lower volumes and the distortion of competition across Europe.
He called on the ministers to consider a contingency plan that would relax the grip on charges made on the processing sector and to take action over the effect that cheap supermarket prices was also having on the industry.
