Chicken Shortage Problem Expected to be Solved Next Week

25 July 2013

MALAYSIA - The Malaysian Agriculture Ministry expects to meet the shortage of chicken on the market by next week.

The Star Online reports that Johor Agriculture and Agro-based Industry committee chairman Mohamad Ismail Mohamad said that the Johor Poultry Association had given its assurance that chicken more than 35 days could be produced to meet the market demand.

"We have been preparing to import chicken. However, we have not decided on the numbers to import as the poultry association has recently promised more chicken supply.

"The shortage of chicken will be solved by next week and there will be enough to support the demand for Ramadan and Aidilfitri," he said.

Mr Mohamad said various plantation associations would also supply chicken besides the poultry farms.

On the hike in chicken price, he said the issue would be resolved naturally when supply was sufficient and when the chickens became controlled price item one week before and after the Aidilfitri, whereby the ceiling price would be capped.

He said the price aspect would be handled by the Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Department.

"We hope stringent enforcement will be carried out to ensure all traders adhere to the price directive," he said.

Mr Mohamad said traders taking advantage of the festive season to seize profits was the main reason for the chicken shortage problem.

He added that there were also problems of drastic increase in chicken demand as more traders were buying more chicken for night markets and Ramadan Bazaar.
