Future of Beenleigh Plant in Question12 July 2013
AUSTRALIA - Talks between the Australian meat processor Teys and the Australasian Meat Workers Union broke down this week as the union refused to put the latest pay offer to workers at the company’s Beenleigh processing plant.
Now Teys is threatening to close the Beenleigh plant near Brisbane in Queensland putting 800 jobs under threat.
According to reports from Australia, the company proposed a three per cent wage rise plus a 7.5 per cent productivity bonus.
However, the union is reported to have refused to put the offer to a ballot.
The company is reported to be considering the future of the plant, which has been the centre of a workers dispute for several months and a decision on closure is expected next month.
