Survey Shows Butchers' Sales Down in the Spring

Meat & Livestock Australia

AUSTRALIA – Markets research agency Millward Brown has reported weaker butcher sales for the April-June quarter.

All four major meats (pork, beef, lamb and chicken) did not sell as well, according to anecdotal evidence from the MLA monthly butcher survey, carried out by Millward Brown.

Both chicken and beef were reported by 39 per cent of respondents as having ‘excellent’ or ‘very good’ sales, down from 44 per cent and 42 per cent , respectively, last year. A further 35 per cent of respondents indicated ‘good’ sales of chicken, with 42 per cent for beef. Lamb sales were reported as ‘excellent’ or ‘very good’ by 31 per cent of butchers surveyed, along with 25 per cent of pork sales.

Casserole cuts were identified as being some of the more popular sales, reflecting the colder weather moving into winter. Somewhat surprisingly, there was also good demand noted for higher quality beef steak cuts, including striploin, T-bone, rump and cube roll.
