Meat Workers Strike at Teys Plant31 May 2013
AUSTRALIA - A strike over pay has closed down a Teys meat processing plant in Beenleigh, south of Brisbane.
It is the second day of recent industrial action at the plant.
According to ABC the Australian Meat Industries Employees Union says the workers are angry over increasing workloads while pay has been cut.
Union secretary Brian Crawford told ABC that the company wanted to increase workloads by up to 20 per cent and reduce earnings by up to 20 per cent.
However, ABC adds that Teys Australia says workers' expectations need to be realistic if 800 jobs at the plant are to be protected.
Chief executive officer Brad Teys told the news group that the company can no longer afford the existing penalties and conditions.
