French Processor to Close Following Horse Meat Scandal30 May 2013
FRANCE - The French meat processing plant at the centre of the horse meat in beef products scandal earlier this year looks set to close with the loss of 240 jobs.
The company that has been placed in administration is reported to have until the middle of next week to find a buyer.
According to Euronews, the meat workers trade union Forces Ouvrieres said that although it wants to find a solution to the problems faced by the meat processor, it holds out little hope for the jobs of the workforce.
In April the company A la Table de Spanghero issued a statement saying that it had been place in administration by the Carcassonne Tribunal in order to protect the company while a buyer could be found.
However, since the end of February the company said it had been the victim of a deceit over the quality of batches of meat it had bought from a company in the Netherlands.
The company said it was making every effort to relaunch.
The administrator said that while it was a sad situation with consequences for the workforce, the company’s turnover had dropped by 50 per cent and it was suffering heavy losses.
