New Red Meat Forum for Halal Sector23 May 2013
UK - A new open forum to discuss what needs to be done to help the Halal red meat industry move forward is being created.
The forum, which replaces the current Halal Steering Group, will meet twice a year and be open for anyone involved in halal lamb or beef production to come along and discuss the challenges and opportunities for the sector.
The sessions will help steer EBLEX-funded work to support the halal sector.
“The halal sector is a very diverse one and having this type of forum regularly will give the opportunity for all the different parts to come together to discuss what they feel should be the priorities to push the sector forward,” said John Cross, EBLEX chairman, announcing the move.
“The Halal Forum will seek to engage with the full spectrum of the Halal sector representatives. There will be no specifically appointed members but will be open to anyone who has an interest in the Halal sector, ensuring transparency and openness in discussion on relevant issues.
“Through these meetings, we hope to gather as many views as possible to help steer relevant EBLEX activity. In time, it will also give us the opportunity to report back on this work and the reasoning for undertaking specific projects. There are many specific challenges in the Halal sector and it is important that we channel activity in areas that can bring cost-effective benefits and that have buy-in from the Muslim community.
“I would like to thank the members of the steering group who have been involves over the last three years and hope they will continue to work with us through the forum.”
The move to establish a forum was ratified by the EBLEX board last week. The date and exact format of the first session have yet to be decided, but is likely to take place before the end of the year.
