Event Highlights High Welfare Message16 May 2013
UK - European demand for high-welfare meat products came under the spotlight at an international conference hosted by EBLEX.
More than 60 delegates attended the Young European Meat Committee (YEMCO), which was held in the UK for the first time on 10 and 11 May, and included a keynote address from Andrea Gavinelli, head of the Animal Welfare Unit at the European Commission.
The over-arching message was that morally and socially conscious meat producers needed to maintain high welfare standards and imported products should not be allowed to undermine high-welfare European ones.
Dr Phil Hadley, EBLEX southern senior regional manager, said: “The event proved to be incredibly popular. Importantly, it underlined the fact that European consumers demand high welfare products, a demand that producers are moving heaven and earth to satisfy.
“It also provided the ideal forum for young executives and managers from European companies involved in the meat and livestock industry to discuss issues affecting the sector.”
