Dutch Move Away from Castrating Boar Pigs07 May 2013
EU - Around half of Dutch male pigs are now castrated - a much higher proportion than in some other member states.
Citing Boerderij Vandaag, the latest Export Bulletin reports Gé Backus, the EU coordinator on castration, as saying that about 50 per cent of Dutch males pigs are now entire boars. This compares with about two per cent in 2006. The push by Dutch retailers explains this difference.
In France, Germany and Denmark, the proportion is still only five per cent, 10 per cent in Belgium and in Sweden, 20 per cent, he said.
