Drought Conditions Lead to Emergency Powder Ruling

25 April 2013

BRAZIL - Drought hit regions of Brazil have been granted permission to revert milk powder back to liquid pasteurised forms.

This relaxation of milk processing rules applies to the drought hit north eastern region of the country. The Piauí, Maranhão, Rio Grande do Norte, Ceará, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Paraiba, Sergipe and Bahia regions are included under this temporary legislation revision.

Reconstitution consists of adding water to milk powder which is usually prohibited by law. However, in this extreme case milk processing plants in north east Brazil are being allowed to resort 35 per cent of their milk power back into pasteurised liquid forms.

Following extended dry periods many farmers are struggling against fodder shortages and dying stock.

"The situation is affecting millions of the northeastern population which caused the Ministry of Agriculture to act quickly. The goal is to prevent harm to local economies and avert milk shortages to customers, "said Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply, Antonio Andrade.
