Dutch Uncover Large Horse Meat Fraud11 April 2013
NETHERLANDS - The Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority is trying to trace 50,000 tonnes of beef that could contain horse meat.
The meat was supplied through the companies Wiljo Import and Export BV / Vleesgroothandel Willy Selten BV (Stelten) to 132 meat processors and manufacturers in the Netherlands and then to more than 370 companies across the rest of Europe.
The food safety authority, nVWA, said that the documentation for the meat made its origin unclear.
It said that the meat has probably now been processed and resold.
"Because of the unclear origin of consignments of meat, the food safety of the meat is not guaranteed," the nVWA said.
However the safety authority added: "At this moment there are no concrete indications that there is a danger to public health."
The nVWA has notified the EU states of the recall through the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF).
