More Reported Ill in E.coli Outbreak09 April 2013
US - A total of 27 people have now been reported to have been infected in the outbreak of E.coli STEC O121 in 15 states, with three new cases in Illinois, Michigan and New York.
According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention the otbreak has been link to consumption of Fram Rich frozen food products from Rich Products Corp.
The CDC said that the outbreak started at the end of December last year and the data taken up to 198 march shows that those taken ill range for two years old to 75 with a median age of 17.
In all 81 per cent of those taken ill are 21 years of age or younger and 35 per cent have been hospitalised. Two ill people developed hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS), a type of kidney failure.No deaths have been reported.
All the 20 people who have been ill and have been interviewed reported consuming frozen food products, with 10 havoing consumed Farm Rich brand frozen food products.
Investigations are ongoing to determine the specific types and sources of frozen food that might be linked with illness, as well as to determine which particular ingredients or components of these products may be contaminated.
