Uruguayan Beef Exports to China High08 April 2013
Uruguay is seeing a surge in beef exports to China thanks to the increased demand, with shipments for the first two months of 2013 higher than the same period in 2012.
In 2012, Uruguayan beef exports to China reached 21,157 tonnes, up 82 per cent on the previous year according to figures from the Uruguayan meat promotion agency INAC.
For the third month in the last six months, China became the primary destination for Uruguayan beef, with 5,190 tonnes in February - a five-fold increased year-on-year, with frozen forequarter accounting for 21 per cent of total shipments, according to Meat and Livestock Australia.
Despite the forecast surge in beef demand from China in 2013, the Uruguayan industry reportedly remains cautious regarding just how sustainable both volumes and the higher prices can be over the medium term.
However, INAC is preparing for a push on beef and lamb at SIAL China from 7-9 May and there will be a parallel push in Shanghai at the Hyat Hotel from 6-12 May
