Opportunities For Irish Beef as Iran Drops Import Ban

IRELAND – After a 17 year hiatus, the Irish Department of Agriculture has announced the resumption of beef exports to Iran.

Simon Coveney, Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine confirmed last week that boneless Irish beef from animals aged under 30 months had been given the go-ahead from the Iranian government, ending a ban that started in 1996.

The Irish Cattle and Sheep Association has welcomed the decision saying ‘the more markets for Irish beef the better'.

“While EU markets will continue to account for the vast majority of Irish beef exports, gaining new international outlets is an important element in ensuring that there will be sufficient demand to keep Irish beef price on an upward curve,” said ICSA beef committee chair, Edmond Phelan.

Boasting a population of 80 million people and a developing middle class the ICSA has said that the Iranian market offers huge potential.

However, there is scepticism around whether the Iranian market will return a viable price.
