Fourth Quarter Meat Production Down

06 March 2013

MALTA – Fourth quarter meat production fell by three per cent in Malta but was met with rising producer value, according to the National Statistics Office.

Meat production fell to 3,093 tonnes over the period.

Pork output, which dropped by 12 per cent, lead the decline despite 22.3 per cent increases in beef production and six per cent increases in broiler meat.

The noted beef increase was due to a 17.4 per cent rise in slaughtering. Pig slaughtering fell by 2,837 heads although carcases were 0.9 per cent heavier.

Broiler meat production went up 6 per cent as a result of carcase rates increasing 6.3 per cent, which mitigated slight slaughter number drops.

Value of meat animals amounted to €6.9 million, up 9.1 per cent on the fourth quarter in 2011.
