Singaporean Broiler Meat Imports Forecast to Rise in 2013

SINGAPORE - On 28 January, the USDA's Food Safety Inspection Service (FSIS) published an updated version of export requirements for trade to be carried out with Singapore. The section "Processing with Antimicrobial Treatments" has been made the focal point as far as poultry trade is concerned.

The section emphasises that fresh or frozen meat and poultry and processed meat and poultry products for export to Singapore with production dates on or after 1 April 2013 can only be treated with the following antimicrobial agents: acetic acid; blend of lactic acid, citric acid and potassium hydroxide; ammonium hydroxide; citric and hydrochloric acid adjusted to ph 0.5-2; lactic acid; sodium hypochlorite; calcium hypochlorite; and peroxyacetic acid.

An FTA has been going on between the US and Singapore since 1 January 2004. This is the US's first ever FTA with an Asian country. According to the USDA's latest International Egg and Poultry review, under the agreement, Singapore immediately guarantees no tariffs on all US goods, and the former cannot increase duties on any US product.

Singapore’s estimated total broiler meat imports for 2013 are forecast to rise to 145,000MT, up 61 per cent since 2002. US broiler meat exports to Singapore for 2012 are down 29 per cent from 2011, but are up 99 per cent since 2002.

US turkey meat exports to Singapore for 2012 are 2,427.8MT and have risen 11 per cent over 2011 and are up 432 per cent since 2002. US egg product exports to Singapore for 2012 are 820.4MT, 8 per cent higher than 2011 and a 51 per cent increase over 2002.
