Argentinean Cattle Slaughter Rises

ARGENTINA - Argentinean cattle slaughter during the third quarter of 2012 increased 4.6 per cent year-on-year, to 2.96 million head, with beef production for the same period rising 2.4 per cent, to 667,000 tonnes cwt accordign to INAC.

Analysts at Meat and Livestock Austraia said that an increased supply of fed cattle helped to facilitate the higher slaughter for the quarter, along with female throughout rising 15 per cent year-on-year, to 1.22 million head.

Despite a two per cent rise in beef production for the first nine months of 2012, to 1.92 million tonnes cwt, beef exports continued to decline, with 93 per cent of all production remaining in the domestic market.

Exports during January to October continued to track at historical low levels, down 21 per cent year-on-year, to 101,514 tonnes swt. The reduction in shipments was driven by lower volumes to Russia (down 45 per cent, to 8,393 tonnes swt), Venezuela (down 50 per cent, to 2,569 tonnes swt) and US (down 96 per cent, to 352 tonnes swt).
