Foreign Secretary Backs Meat Exports

UK - The Foreign Secretary, William Hague, threw his support behind the growth of UK meat exports during a trade mission to South Africa, spearheaded by the EBLEX and BPEX divisions of the Agriculture & Horticulture Development Board (AHDB).

During the major export mission, organised in collaboration with UK Trade and Industry (UKTI), Mr Hague cited the UK’s “great livestock sector” and commended efforts to reopen markets that have been closed to UK meat exports.

Mr Hague was addressing a reception of 70 people, including some of the largest UK exporters of beef and pork, local importers, journalists and food personalities.

South Africa is the largest importer of meat on the African continent and must meet the needs of its growing population and higher incomes.

Jean-Pierre Garnier, head of exports for EBLEX and BPEX, said: “We are very pleased with this top level support for our fast growing exports of meat. South Africa, in particular, is an important market which has only recently reopened its border and has a lot of potential for growth."

“This reception celebrated our return to this market. We were warmly welcomed by the South African meat trade during this mission and are convinced that the UK will recover its place in this market and develop sizeable exports of beef and pork.”
