Casino Abattoir Takes Up Ramsey Operations

25 October 2011

AUSTRALIA - The Ramsey Group is to close the South Grafton New South Wales abattoir on 14 Novemebr.

According to reports, the cattleslaughtering is to be taken up by the Northern Co-operative Meat Company's Casino Abattoir.

All the permanent long-term employees are to be offered jobs at teh Casino abattoir and the Northern Co-operative Meat Company says it has enough capacity to accommodate the extra cattle from the Ramsey operation.

According to a report in The Daily Examiner, Frank Hannigan, solicitor for the Ramsey Group of companies, said the move from Grafton was regretted and was not the preferred option by the Ramsey Group.

The Examiner report says the closure follows a Federal Court judgment on Wednesday which found that Ramsey had engaged in deceitful conduct when the abattoir sacked 11 workers without paying their entitlements just before Christmas 2008.

Last week Ramsey Food Processing was found guilty of contempt in the NSW Land and Environment Court after it failed to carry out an environmental audit of the South Grafton site and failed to place notices in newspapers to notify the public.

Ramsey Food Processing is expected back in court in December for further hearings and sentencing on contempt of court charges.
