Federal-Provincial Funding Aids Promotion

03 November 2010

CANADA - Wild West Seasoning is expanding marketing promotion for its made-in-Manitoba product line.

Schwartz Sausage Company Inc., owned and operated as Wild West Seasonings by Janet and Rod Schwartz of Headingley, Manitoba, will enhance the introduction of its new food seasoning products into the marketplace and promote its custom packaging capabilities with C$19,500 in funding from the governments of Canada and Manitoba.

Wild West produces and markets a line of food seasonings for making jerky, sausage and smoked fish. It also provides custom packaging services to other manufacturers.

"The Government of Canada is proud to help domestic companies expand their market opportunities," said Steven Fletcher the Minister of State for Democratic Reform, Member of Parliament (Charleswood-St. James-Assiniboia including Headingley) on behalf of Agriculture Minister Gerry Ritz. "New markets for Wild West Seasonings will increase demand for livestock and fish, benefit farmers, and boost the local economy by creating new jobs."

Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives Minister, Stan Struthers, commented: "We are pleased to support innovative companies like Wild West Seasonings that turn good ideas into business opportunities, creating new made-in-Manitoba food products that benefit consumers, bring recognition to our province and build economic benefits for their community and all Manitobans.

"This company's packaging capabilities also benefit other small businesses, further developing value-added opportunities."

Janet and Rod Schwartz said: "Our company recently recognized that marketing trends are significantly growing by e-commerce and on-line marketing. We are excited to receive the government funding that will help launch this marketing effort which will lead to building a new network of customers and increased sales."

The federal-provincial funding will support an extensive marketing programme for the company and its products and services. The promotion campaign will include a re-design of the Wild West web site, on-line advertising, e-commerce development, and on-site promotions like in-store demonstrations and trade shows The goal of the campaign is to increase sales and create new jobs within the company.

Seasonings currently produced by Wild West target consumers who smoke and preserve their own fish and hunters who process their own jerky and sausage. The company is also preparing to launch a new line of fish brines that will be unique to the Manitoba market.

The custom packaging service offered by Wild West provides form, fill and seal capabilities. These are services many small businesses currently outsource to processors outside the province, so dealing locally can provide cost savings to Manitoba entrepreneurs.

Wild West is a member of the Organic Producers Association of Manitoba. The manufacturing facility is a certified organic handling and packaging plant and HACCP (Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point) ready. HACCP is a food safety system that helps to ensure each step of the food development process in a production plant has a science-based monitoring and control system in place.

The Manitoba Agri Innovation Suite is part of Growing Forward, a federal-provincial-territorial initiative that is investing $1.3 billion towards the agriculture and agri-food industry in Canada.
