Further Accreditation of Food Inspection Bodies

02 November 2010

CHINA - Work is continuing on the accreditation of food inspection institutions.

The Certification and Accreditation Administration of the People's Republic of China (CNCA) stated that the work on accreditation of food inspection institutions would be further carried out in China at the national meeting on accreditation of laboratories and inspection institutions held in Beijing on 29 to 30 October.

Official sources say that the food inspection institution accreditation management system is an important system to ensure food safety in China based on the provisions of the Food Safety Law. This law stipulates that 'food inspection institutions can be engaged in food inspection activities only when they are accredited in accordance with related national certification and accreditation regulations'.

Accordingly, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) issued the Methods for Management of Food Inspection Institution Accreditation, the Ministry of Health (MOH) unveiled the Conditions for Accreditation of Food Inspection Institutions, and CNCA formulated the Guidelines for Approval of Food Inspection Institution Accreditation. So far, there have been nearly 6,000 food inspection institutions, over 25,000 valid certificates of accreditation, and 433 accredited national quality inspection centers across the country.
