Belgian Global Meat Exports Reach New Height

19 November 2010

With a volume of 372.250 tonnes product weight, including fats and offal, worldwide export of Belgian pig meat grew by 3.3 per cent in the first half of 2010, compared to the same period last year.

The Belgian meat marketing organisation VLAM said that Germany is still by far the most important destination with a total of 146,844 tonnes of pig meat.

The Netherlands follow with 28,414 tonnes and the United Kingdom comes next with slightly less than 28,000 tonnes.

With a growth of 13 per cent, the export expansion to Poland has proved itself successful yet again, VLAM said.

The demand for Belgian pig meat from the Czech Republic and Romania however is really striking, with an export increase of respectively 79.4 per cent and 53.6 per cent.

Export to Eastern Europe is clearly gaining in importance according to VLAM.

“A couple of successful contact days in these countries have proven their effectiveness. The high cutting yield and the excellent service level have been acknowledged and are highly appreciated,” said Joris Coenen, marketing officer of Belgian Meat Office.

Outside the EU, the Russian Federation was the biggest client in the first half of 2010.

Hong Kong took the second place with 8,119 tons of pig meat but, compared to the same period last year, the volume has decreased.

In South Korea on the other hand, imports of pig meat from Belgium registered a 15 per cent increase with a total of 7,894 tonnes.
